Principles of Design

This week we learned about the way the 7 elements are used in design. There are 5 basic principles. Here are my interpretations of them:

1) Balance. Think of whether the photo is symmetric. Does it show balance? Or is the photo asymmetric and shows an almost equal off balance?

2) Proportion. Are the elements in the photo equal or pleasantly unequal? Do you see space and distance?

3) Rhythm. Do the elements move? Are they all positioned in the same direction? Does the style allow for movement?

4) Emphasis. Closely related to proportion, do the elements have a focal point?

5) Unity. Do all the elements work together? Is there a consistancy throughout the photo?

Composition and Shape

This is the original photo used
This week we learned about shapes, their composition and how to use these to bring emotion to the design. The way images are used on a page can elicit emotions from the audience. If done well, it can achieve the goals you were aiming for (i.e - a popular advertisement that brings sales).

In the case of this week's class, we were given the task of choosing a photo, taking 5 silhouettes from the image and creating 6 different images using these silhouettes. Below is my original and my compositions. Let me know if you can guess which emotion I was aiming for.

(**spoiler alert** - I placed an answer key at the bottom of the post)

The 7 Elements of Art

This week we learned about the 7 Elements of Art. While many images contain multiple elements and can be used to highlight many things at once, this week's assignment is to find 3 photographs for each element that best showcase that element. Some of the photo's I will use for this post I had a hard time with. Some will one dominant character and other will have multiples. In the end, I hope to have presented them out for you to best understand what each concept is meant to show.

1) LINE - See how the lines in the photos draw your eyes throughout the images?
*********

2) Shape - The shapes created with these photos captivate and draw attention

*********

3) Color (hue and value) - Not all images have color but they do all have a value.

 *********

4) Texture - The texture created with the wood, shading of the leaves and tree that 'eats' the bench are almost palpable.

*********
5) Value - Value is tone. How does the tone affect your viewing?

*********
6)Space - Both negative and positive spaces direct your eye across the photo.

*********
7) Form - What is it about these forms that captivate you?
